Enjoy a real getaway
Tambor Tropical is a beachfront, boutique resort at the end of a short, palm tree-lined road on Costa Rica’s tranquil Tambor Bay. The resort has a wide, sandy beach, with shallow and calm waters for swimming. A perfect tropical location.
Because we are located at the base of the bay, guests will discover a wide array of beachcombing treasures, such as cones, bi-valves (our favorite is the magenta “Royal Comb”) and more. Different shells arrive with different seasons throughout the year.
The small town of Tambor is on the Nicoya Peninsula, located on the Pacific Coast. The region is rich with a bountiful variety of birds, monkeys and other wildlife. To the north is the Curu Wildlife Reserve and Tortuga Island, and at the south is a small, community fishing pier.
The Nicoya Peninsula is a Blue Zone — one of the healthiest areas on Earth. A Costa Rican man at age 60 has about twice the chance of reaching age 90 as does a man living in the United States, France or Japan. The Nicoya Peninsula also has the lowest rates of cancer in the country.

Many cities offer direct flights to San José’s Juan Santamaria International airport (SJO). There are direct flights daily from San José to Tambor on Sansa Airlines. The short hop takes less than 30 minutes. Flying Nature Air is another flight option for service to Tambor. Tambor Tropical will provide shuttle service to and from the Tambor Airport upon your arrival and departure.
From San José, the new highway to Puntarenas takes about 90 minutes to two hours, is paved and in good condition. From there, drivers can catch a ferry to either Paquera or Naranjo. The Paquera ferry takes about 75 minutes, but you might have to wait for it in Puntarenas. For the current website schedule, go HERE. Paquera is the better choice since it’s closer to Tambor and the road is paved. The road from Naranjo to Paquera is dirt and gravel.
Transportes Cobano operates two daily buses from San José to Cóbano, stopping in Tambor. Including the ferry ride, the trip takes about four hours.
“The beauty of the country and Tambor Tropical are only surpassed by the kindness and hospitality of the staff. We had a wonderful vacation and hope to be lucky enough to visit again.”
