We are thrilled that Costa Rica has received the 2019 “Champions of the Earth” award from the United Nations, under its policy leadership category.

This honor was in recognition of our country’s commitment to fight climate change, while protecting nature through our ambitious policies.

Currently 98% of our energy is renewable and follows a five-decade long commitment to repopulate our forest growth. Future plans include decarbonizing the country by 2050, as well as focusing on public transportation, waste management, smart cities and sustainable agriculture.

“Costa Rica has been a pioneer in the protection of peace and nature and sets an example for the region and for the world,” says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Program.

President Carlos Alvarado Quesada has been quoted as saying, “Receiving the Champions of the Earth award on behalf of  Costa Rica, its entire population, the past generations who protected the environment, and future generations fills me with pride and emotion for what Costa Rica has achieved and for what we can continue to do because we can achieve even more. I feel very proud to be Costa Rican.”

We are thrilled for this amazing recognition and will do our best at Tambor Tropical to continue to play our part as a Champion of the Earth.
